After the snow moves north
the prairie crocus,
native anemone,
ears of the earth
listens
for the rustle of summer.

Gently she sways
to moments of truth.
In her petals
the purple-blue mist
of far distant mountains;
a small golden sun
close to her heart.

Eternity
folds close around her,
warms her
from the cold winds
of spring.

Chickadee

chickadee2

It was a crisp, sunny
October afternoon
in the arboretum.
I was meditating.
My mittened hands
rested,
upturned on my thighs.

A chickadee hovered
in front of me.
Seeing a convenient perch,
it landed in my open palm,
then hopped upon my thumb.
She looked me up and down,
side to side.
Having seen
all there was to see,
she flew away.

She brought such joy,
this tiny feathered thing.
I valued her presence
as a gift of trust,
a gift of love,
a sign from nature
and the universe
that all was well.

Lioness in Heat

lions2

I heard her
from a ways off,
the distinctive mewl
of a lioness in heat.
I licked my paws.

She’ll find me.

She found me,
paraded around
with her tail in the air,
leaving her scent
on the breeze.

I was interested
but didn’t show it.
She began licking me
I licked her back —
we licked a lot.

She crouched
belly to the ground,
tail to one side.
I bit her neck
then mounted.

This continued
for five exhausting days.
Eventually, she wandered off.
Perhaps, we’ll meet again,
or not.

unobserved
i gaze upon you
lost in the world of a book.
i wonder which poet,
which author
holds your wrapt attention
to the exclusion
of all else.

Is it Burroughs?
Aristophanes?
or is it lighter reading,
a novel perhaps?
erotic historical romance?
i could ask you
but hesitate
to break their spell.

I’m just kicking stones, chasing loneliness — nothing much to do;
In my dusty hat and western boots — soles are worn clear through.
I’m leaving heartache, going nowhere fast, more dead than alive.
At daybreak, feet are pointing to, Desperation Drive.

When you’re down and out, in a hard-luck place, no stars shine at night;
I’ve been looking down, such a long, long time, just can’t see the light.
Haven’t got a cent, haven’t got a friend, no will to survive;
That’s the reason why, I’m heading for, Desperation Drive.

There was a woman — vowed she loved me, caught the midnight train;
She took my money, left my broken heart, drowning in the rain.
Got to leave this town, have to hitch a ride, out on highway five;
If they ask me where, I’m going I’ll say to, Desperation Drive.

I miss that woman, she’s still in mind, the breeze whispers her name;
She’s mean and evil, but my lonely heart, wants her just the same.
On the waterfront, I check the bars and every lowdown dive;
If she’s not there, I’ll find a place on, Desperation Drive.

“We planted you, we nurtured you, we protected you
until you became a mighty tree that spread through our
hunting grounds. With its branches you now lash us.”
– Mississauga Chief

IMG_4656

Steps used by the Rideau Lakes Mississauga
Band of the Ojibwe or Anishinaabe Nation, for
traditional Sun Dance and other ceremonies.

…

I sit on ancient steps of stone
by myself, but not alone.
The presence of ten thousand souls
imbues me with their joys and goals.

The steps lead to a sacred place;
for Mississauga prayers and grace.
They danced to celebrate the sun
before the white man and the gun.

I seek what they sought; love and peace ~
for wars around the world to cease.
To live a life of nature’s plan
in harmony with fellow man.

In harmony with living things
and everything that nature brings.
I sit on ancient steps of stone
with souls to guide me on my own.

A flicker
of cerulean
swoops beneath the boughs

Wings, a silent whisper.
Dream, not quite come true.
Shadow, on my mind.
Memory
in blue.

The silence of
the mourning dove,
more mournful
than her song.

She’s lost her mate,
her will to live,
yet time
still passes on.

Of days gone by,
she dreams her dreams,
when last she
heard him sing.

In widow’s weeds,
by empty nest,
a lonely dove
has lost her song.

The Letter

I wanted to write
you a letter.
I didn’t know
just what to say.
So much has happened
little has happened
it’s happening every day.

You talked to me
of forever
so far away
yet, not so far.
You whispered
we’d be together
united as a single star.

I wandered the woods
lost and alone.
You took my hand
guided and charmed me.
Woodsmoke and cedar
drifted on the breeze.
I wondered if I’d find you
hiding behind our old oak tree.

high in the treetops
our nest near the sky.
we snuggle and watch
the stars shooting by;
stars that we wish on,
stars that we name,
stars with no purpose,
we love just the same.

twigs interwoven
with love and with care,
feathers and ribbons
from a dress that you wear.
pieces of memories,
dreams stuffed between,
baubles and buttons,
things that we’ve seen:

a bracelet, a necklace
an earring or two.
things that we’ve thought of,
things that we’ll do.
a nest comfy, cozy
a fit just for two.
my heart’s yours forever
I love you, I do.

Dawn Till Dusk

dawn

Tender breaks the gentle dawn
as pink steals through the purple.
Crickets chirp and bullfrogs croak
while loons emit their warble.

Shafts of light illumine leaves —
paths of life I ponder —
sky is choreographed by clouds
from bliss, to peace, to somber.

Its prancing hooves, barely heard,
the curious fawn draws near.
Our eyes connect — mystically,
communication clear.

Spooked, it turns and scampers on —
nature’s cast, each plays it’s part.
Air is fresh with scent of pine.
Joy, overwhelms my heart.

A feather, from a blue jay,
snagged on sprig so feeble.
Was it loosened in its flight,
or ripped, by plunging eagle?

Nature cyclically evolves,
fall is prey to winter.
Life is born and then it dies —
there isn’t any victor.

From each death there sprouts new life;
moldering logs, maternal.
Passings, cause our hearts to break,
while new life springs eternal.

I’ll return — another month,
some other me — to this shrine,
imperfect in perfection,
befitting God’s design.

butterfly

You say
you’re normal.
You put yourself down —
just one of many,
nothing special.

You’re delicate
and appear fragile
but, fly thousands of miles
buffeted by winds,
inclement weather.

Readers marvel
at your countenance.
Wonderful worlds you create,
inspiring all —
a virtuoso with words.

I marvel also
at your compassion,
consideration, intelligence,
strength and wisdom.
I am enthralled.

Lioness in Heat

lions2

I heard her
from a ways off,
the distinctive mewl
of a lioness in heat.
I licked my paws.
She’ll find me.

She found me,
paraded around
with her tail in the air,
leaving her scent
on the breeze.

I was interested,
but didn’t show it.
She began licking me
I licked her back —
we licked a lot.

She crouched,
belly to the ground,
tail to one side.
I bit her neck
then mounted.

This continued
for five exhausting days.
Eventually, she wandered off.
Perhaps, we’ll meet again,
or not.

We walk
through the surf
my hand holding yours.
We see diamonds
brighter than the stars
of the night sky.
We see porpoises
mating.

Can there be
anything more special,
more precious,
than shells in the sunlight?
We’ve found paradise
here on earth
where neither of us
had previously
visited.

I awake
to find myself
crouching on a beach
I have never before seen.
Water laps at my toes.
My fingers pick at empty shells,
all kinds and colors.
Thoughts are empty
as the shells.
The horizon is infinite
with barely distinction
between sky and water.
I feel suspended
between the two —
lost.

Appearing
close beside me
is a moving shadow.
I see the silhouette
of a woman.
Blazing sunrise blinds me
to anything else.
Beside me she squats,
silently picks
at shells.
We do not speak.
She takes my hand
and leads me to
our dream.

dryad6

A young deer
wandered into view.
I drifted off
in gentle slumber.

I felt a pair
of tender hands
coverer my eyes.
I heard a giggle.

I hesitantly
touched her hand.
She revealed herself,
and met my gaze.

This apparition,
with angelic face,
bent and placed
her lips on mine.

I was transformed
and with the dryad
flew to the most
magical place.

cross legged on the floor
eating a peach

juice meandered
down her chin
to the hollow
at the base of her neck

I couldn’t resist
the taste of peach
the taste of her

south
the juices dripped
followed by my tongue
to the tastiest fruit

duskc

our paddles  dip

silently into the black.

evening mist hovers

over the lake

as we glide near the shore.

otters playfully cruise nearby,

raccoons timidly drink,

deer watch

.

later

a camp fire

to ward off the chill

of the northern breeze.

time to cuddle close,

whisper secrets

even though

we’re alone

on a log i sit

in my happy place

 inhale the fragrance…

wood smoke and cedar.

attend the aria

of the nightingale —

her longing,

each twitter and trill,

writes to my heart.

a bird on a branch

me on a log

she chose me

Abby-Beach-Oct2005

when i was a boy,

Spot,

a black and white Cocker Spaniel

chose me.

she looked like the dog

in our grade one readers

“Run, Spot, run!”

she was a stray

wandering around our neighborhood

looking for a home.

there were other kids she could have chosen

but, she chose me.

our family adopted her.

it changed my life —

i  had a friend.

in winter

she refused to go outdoors

in freezing temperatures.

she peed and pooped on our basement floor

with a shovel, my dad would pick up after her

once a week he would spray the floor

with the garden hose

Spot left us

like Peter Pan

when we stopped believing in her

when i walk through the woods

i imagine her, beyond the next bend,

chasing butterflies,

or being chased by rabbits —

she’s with me

always.

Over the past years
we’ve sat together
sharing a blanket
on the sidewalk.
You wrapped
in your cocoon.

I’ve observed,
as your spirit
(once battered
and cowering in fear)
emerged brave
and purposeful.

Gradually,
layer after layer,
your past fell away,
until now
your true beauty
shines forth.

I’ve grown with you,
learned from you,
opened my heart,
cried with you,
been comforted.

I celebrate with you
your transformation,
and (in friendship)
proudly accompany you
in your reincarnation
as a butterfly.

viking_ship_at_sea_amazing_ships_wallpapers_1024_x_768-1024x768

I stand proud
at the helm
of a dragon headed
Viking longship.
Salt spray lashes my face.
Canvas billows and flaps
with buffeting winds.

To appease Aegir,
god of the sea,
I have offered sacrifices.
He will protect me
on my voyage
through his realm.

Thor’s chariot,
drawn by a pair of goats,
rumbles thunder
across clouded skies,
as he wages war
against the Giants.

I love the sea,
but I’ll be glad
to get home to my wife.
She’s a warrior, healer,
teller and keeper of tales —
our heritage.
