white-buffalo-calf-woman

A wraith was writhing in the air,
its undulating shape so fair;
just like a woman slim and tall —
I followed with no fear at all.

Drifting, she led me through the trees
under branches, upon my knees,
until I found myself quite lost —
my folly gained, but at what cost?

I sat upon a log and thought
of this misfortune I had wrought —
from the mist, to my surprise,
a female form materialized.

A lithesome beauty, to be sure,
approached me with a gaze so pure.
I sat transfixed, afraid to move
expecting that this shape would prove,

perhaps, to be a daylight dream,
evanescent, not what it seemed —
a vision that would fade from sight
as quickly as a beam of light.

Yet, she remained and held my hand,
explained, so I could understand —
the holy earth is our Mother,
the deer and trees are our brothers.

Everyone shares a common root
though each produces different fruit.
Our Mother Earth gives birth to all —
the things that walk, fly, swim and crawl.

This planet is here for us to use
to grow our crops, not to abuse.
Winds and rains and things that glisten
each have stories if we listen.

There Are No Horses Anymore

It’s like you’ve been reading Dostoevsky
and your mind is heavy,
so you go for a walk.
You haven’t eaten,
but instead of soup,
you order two glasses of beer.
You know how Rodion felt,
because you’re him.
You walk into the street
and a dark horse is being beaten,
but, that can’t be,
because there are no horses anymore —

that was only a dream;
only in the book.
You think you’re going mad,
but, it’s alright,
you don’t have to worry.
Someone has just closed the cover —
you’re tucked away, safe inside.
Everything is alright.

Morning Star, Evening Star
North guides the sailors
count us our blessings
long into the night

weave me a blanket
made out of moments
dreams of discovery
adventures now past

will me, be still me
arms be my cradle
comfort and kindness
within your caress

sing me forever
that place far away
close as a heartbeat
our home where we’ll stay

Fairies

Autumn-Fairy-Cosplay-05

If you wander into the woods
stealthily peek behind the trees.
Fairies may be in hiding there;
they’ll vanish, quick as you please.

The fairies are a friendly folk,
at least, they may appear that way.
They’ll lure you with their fairy wiles;
siren-like, they’ll lead you astray.

Timid, beautiful woodland nymphs
swathed in soft diaphanous gowns.
In subtle shades of nature’s hues
bright leafy greens and somber browns.

Whispers in the rustle of leaves
will lead you to their secret glade.
They’ll gently soothe away your cares.
Why would you need to be afraid?

Fairy maids will wine and dine you.
They’ll whisper that they love you so.
You’ll think that you’re in paradise.
They’ll never, ever let you go.

Weeks and months will pass unnoticed.
What seems a day maybe a year.
The world outside continues on,
while you remain in limbo here.

Fairy mists will envelop you
so you can never see your way.
Memories are, but long lost dreams.
From Fairyland you cannot stray.

fire3

I’ll put a fresh log in the fireplace
if you’ll pour us a glass of wine.
We’ll relax on overstuffed pillows,
smell the scent of burning pine.

Leave stress and hurry behind us.
It’s the time to let worries lie.
We’ll watch the constellations
appear in the darkening sky.

Magic, your eyes by the firelight.
Warm, your smile as you hold my hand.
Tell me your grandmother’s stories
of a nearby but distant land.

We communicate in silence,
My reflection is in your eyes.
Soft and gentle, your fingers.
Delightful, the sound of your sighs.

Stories of us to remember,
our stars melting gently above.
Never before have I felt such joy
as our presence together in love.

Concrete Box

bar

I work in a corporate, concrete box;
no windows, only a computer terminal
to link me to the outside world.
Only second-hand accounts
of weather, traffic,
whether it is day or night.

I sometimes go to work in darkness,
return in darkness.
I don’t know if the sun
remembered to rise at all.
Like the light in a refrigerator.
Does it really turn off
when I close the door?

At a keyboard, my fingers type numbers,
millions of numbers.
My mind wanders woodland paths.
I watch birds flitting from limb to limb,
chipmunks scurrying, stopping,
looking around, then scurrying again.

My mind plays tricks on me.
I imagine that just 26 floors down
I could exit on Beale or Bourbon Street.
Hear sounds of the South,
guitars, saxophones and raspy voices
that rule the rhythm of my body and soul.

Take me on a blues ride.
Let me wander with the lyrics
down Highway 61, “The Blues Highway”.
Let me smell the sweat and the booze,
the jostling at the bar,
the waitress who will smile for a tip.

Let me smell magnolia, bougainvillea,
where Spanish moss hangs below the branches,
see the darkest eyes and brightest smile,
hear that special whisper, “Come with me.”
We’ll walk for miles, be holding hands,
and never want for any more
than our window to a dream.

Tennessee Honey

DSC_4796

Thoughts drift south,
Jack Daniel’s country
where the weather
suits my mood.

On a barstool
I park my bones
Inhale the Jack, magnolia–
sweet, sweet surrender.

A woman alone
at a corner table–
darkest eyes,
brightest smile,
auburn hair
to her shoulders.

I think, Why not?
Our eyes meet,
I saunter towards her
and know, from the look she gives,
she’s heard it all before.

“Ma’am, It would give me
the greatest pleasure
to buy you a drink
and share your table for a while.
If I can’t keep you smilin’
I promise,
I’ll take my conversation elsewhere.”

She said with the utmost
southern grace, charm
and hospitality,
“You’ve got ten minutes.
I don’t like to be disappointed.”

I fell into her raven pools,
somewhere, I got lost there.
I don’t know my way too well
around these parts
but, I’d swear she lured me
with some kind of mojo.

My eyes refused to look away
from ruby lips (so sensual)
as they spoke words of love
in a voice
of the sweetest, southern honey,
words…dripping…
tantalizing.

The evening passed,
holding hands across the table.
I was enthralled and enchanted.
Where it went from there
I refuse to say
(gentleman’s code of honor).

Such beauty
I have never known.
It keeps coming back
to haunt me.

My thoughts
were only passing through
but, in my dreams I see
the darkest eyes,
brightest smile,
hear her voice–
Tennessee honey.

When She Starts in Walking

woman

When she starts in walking, guys they stop their talking.
Their minds are on just what they want to do.
They can dream, scheme and taste it coming true.

She’s got their attention, nothing left to mention.
She knows their minds; she’ll use that on them too.
She’ll lead the way and they will follow through.

She knows what she’s doin’, may lead some to ruin —
casualties, but what’s a girl to do.
Oh, my dear, such a pity, what to do.

Always calculating, lots of time for waiting;
a chump will come along, they always do.
I’m sure one’s coming now, maybe it’s you.

She knows to set her hook; she’ll do it with a look.
She knows he’ll take the bait and then he’s through.
He’s hooked now and squirming in the queue.

She has him on his knees, all he can say is please.
He’ll do her bidding, thinks he’s got her too,
but she’s casting her hook for someone new.

She’s got what she’s after; all that’s left is laughter.
She’s cruel and conniving through and through.
You watch out now, she’s coming straight for you.

I live in the borderlands,
between reality and imagination,
just this side of fantasy.

Reality is okay.
I visit there
to check my mail,
earn a few dollars,
pay some bills,
buy groceries.

Reality is an okay place to visit
but, I wouldn’t want to live there.

I’m happiest in my mind
where I filter my thoughts
like an answering machine.
I delete the negative,
dwell on the positive.

People may see me walking alone.
They don’t see the beautiful woman,
with her hand in mine, beside me.

I may be seen sitting at a table, alone.
Nobody sees the delicate hand,
with the magic fingers,
sliding up my thigh.

Or, the passionate kiss
being planted on my throat,
the fingers running through my hair.

Where I work
people see me smile.
They think I enjoy my job.
They don’t know me.

from a small

everyday i watched
the lithe, graceful figure
tending her garden.

her hair
waves of sunshine
of a color used by Titian
in his portraits
of Judith

my interest
devotion, obsession,
i was powerless to resist —
a voyeuristic
perversion

her image
haunts my dreams
and my waking state.
she follows me
as shadow

I pray
there is a place
beyond pain
where we will rise
in purity
above the cedars.

look down
our hearts have claimed
a rock ledge
to escape the rain,
a cathedral
among ancient pines.

stories
your grandma told
of a past
when buffalo roamed —
we were there
using different names.

Playful Spirit

spirit

Playful spirit behind an oak
laughed and flirted but never spoke.
Eyes of onyx, raven hair,
I marveled at her standing there.

Brilliant sunshine — could barely see.
Had my eyes played tricks on me?
I stood in reverence and awe
not sure of what I thought I saw.

Fluttering soft, the poplar leaves
perhaps, had caused me to believe
I’d seen someone who wasn’t there —
eyes of onyx, raven hair.

The nimble spirit deftly danced
from tree to tree and lightly pranced.
I didn’t know quite what to do
about this vision in my view.

I had no knowledge of such things.
What does one do when nature brings
such beauty, grace and winsome mold
who, I could see but could not hold?

I could have watched her all day long
her movements sang just like a song.
She beckoned me with backward glance
down flowered pathway of romance.

I had no choice, I was entranced;
induced to follow where she danced.
The woods had changed, were foreign now,
colors brighter, surreal somehow.

I saw some spirits on the way.
They went about their normal day.
They took no notice of my form
contrary to their spirit norm.

They were at home among the trees;
conversely, I felt ill at ease.
Abandoned, then just like a snare —
eyes of onyx, raven hair.

She drew me close and hugged me tight;
we kissed, caressed throughout the night.
Not a wisp of evanescence,
but a real woman’s presence.

Wood smoke, sweet-grass, musk and cedar —
I took her hand, she let me lead her.
Beneath the boughs we made our bed
while stars shone brightly overhead.

Fairies

Autumn-Fairy-Cosplay-05

If you wander into the woods
stealthily peek behind the trees.
Fairies may be in hiding there;
they’ll vanish, quick as you please.

The fairies are a friendly folk,
at least, they may appear that way.
They’ll lure you with their fairy wiles;
siren like, they’ll lead you astray.

What seems a day may be a year.
The world outside continues on,
while you remain in limbo here.

Fairy mists will envelop you
so you can never see your way.
Memories are, but long lost dreams.
From Fairyland you cannot stray.

…

fire3

I’ll put a fresh log in the fireplace.
Will you pour us a glass of wine?
We’ll relax on overstuffed pillows,
smell the scent of burning pine.

Leave stress and hurry behind us.
It’s the time to let worries lie.
We’ll watch the constellations
appear in the darkening sky.

Magic, your eyes by the firelight.
Warm, your smile as you hold my hand.
Tell me your grandmother’s stories
of a nearby but distant land.

We communicate in silence,
My reflection is in your eyes.
Soft and gentle, your fingers.
Delightful, the sound of your sighs.

Stories of us to remember,
our stars melting gently above.
Never before have I felt such joy
as our presence together in love.

high in the treetops
our nest near the sky.
we snuggle and watch
the stars shooting by;
stars that we wish on,
stars that we name,
stars with no purpose,
we love just the same.

twigs interwoven
with love and with care,
feathers and ribbons
from a dress that you wear.
pieces of memories,
dreams stuffed between,
baubles and buttons,
things that we’ve seen:

a bracelet, a necklace
an earring or two.
things that we’ve thought of,
things that we’ll do.
a nest comfy, cozy
a fit just for two.
my heart’s yours forever
I love you, I do.

chair

i live in the borderlands,
between reality and imagination,
just this side of fantasy.

reality is okay.
i visit there
to check my mail,
earn a few dollars,
pay some bills,
buy groceries.

reality is an okay place to visit
but, i wouldn’t want to live there.

i’m happiest in my mind
where I filter my thoughts
like an answering machine.
i delete the negative,
dwell on the positive.

people may see me walking alone.
they don’t see the beautiful woman
at my side
with her hand in mine.

i may be seen sitting at a table, alone.
nobody sees the delicate hand,
with the magic fingers,
sliding up my thigh.

or, the passionate kiss
being planted on my throat,
the fingers running through my hair.

where i work
people see me smile.
they think I enjoy my job.
they don’t know me.

butterfly

You say
you’re normal.
You put yourself down —
just one of many,
nothing special.

You’re delicate
and appear fragile
but, fly thousands of miles
buffeted by winds,
inclement weather.

Readers marvel
at your countenance.
Wonderful worlds you create,
inspiring all —
a virtuoso with words.

I marvel also
at your compassion,
consideration, intelligence,
strength and wisdom.
I am enthralled.

So long, Sister

Pulp fiction vixen,
you’ve stolen my heart.
Sultry suggestions,
whiskey and wine,
destroyed my defences
tore me apart.

I played it tough
like a hard boiled dick.
You played it cool
in your form fitting dress,
just one of your kisses —
and gone, oh so quick.

I’ll reach for the bottle
in my bottom desk drawer.
My answer to problems,
affairs of the heart —
if one drink won’t fix it,
I’ll try it some more.

I’ll suck on a cigarette
watch smoke float away.
Think of your perfume
still on my lapel —
chalk one for experience,
the end of a day.

The chapter’s not over,
the case isn’t solved.
When the facts are all sorted,
you’re caught dead to rights —
I’ll say, “So long, Sister.”
my dream has dissolved.

Eyes of Love

I know
I should be master
of my mind.
Too often
I become it’s slave,
allowing it to
take me places
I don’t want to go.

Some of these places
are recalled memories:
unhappy childhood,
failed relationships,
other unpleasant
incidents.

Other places
most pleasant
are imaginary,
perhaps,
a playful meeting
with dryads and sprites,
or an unexpected, late night visit
by a beautiful woman.

I know
that memories
are inaccuracies:
daydreams influenced
by pleasant wishful thinking
or, by the despair
of failure.

In any event,
the only reality
is what I see before me.
By seeing through
the eyes of Love
I can’t be led
astray.

savemedown

as the sun
played with the leaves
in the cool afternoon breeze
i heard your giggle
saw your smiling spirit face
peeking from behind
a clump of trees.

disappointed,
because i hadn’t
the freedom to follow you,
i sighed and waited for nightfall.
as the jealous moon
stole through my window
a devil in a flannel gown
visited my bed.

we snuggled
throughout the night.
my mouth nuzzled your neck.
your skin tasted
of our favorite perfume,
wood smoke and cedar.
i murmured words of love
as I held you tight.
you disappeared
with the dawn’s
early light.

woman

Midnight —
restless, tossing and turning.
I long for the dream
that shows you again.
I don’t know where
you came from
but, the vision
that appears
takes my breath away.

Devil
or angel,
I don’t know which.
In either case
I am yours
to do your bidding.
Moist, red lips
seduce me.
Let me take you
in my arms
to taste the succulence
that is you.

Electra Glide

A motorcycle
pulled up beside me
as I walked along
the Pacific Coast Highway.

“Want a lift?”
said a sweet sexy voice.
“Sure” I said.
I swung my leg over
I don’t mind riding bitch

I slid my fingers
over her perfect hips
and joined them
over her warm, toned abs.

We rode beside the ocean
then stopped to watch the sunset.
Removed our boots
to feel the foaming waves
lapping at our bare feet.

I grasped her hair.
Her red expectant lips
found mine.
The rest of her body
followed.

…

I was standing in line at the liquor store lying to myself, I need this fifth of J.D. for the sore throat that I think may be coming on. In front of me was a woman with long, shapely legs. I paid for my purchase and was heading for the exit. There she was again, red lips, sun glasses and red hair. I recognized her from somewhere, college maybe. I think she was someone’s baby sister.

She said, “Dave, would you like a lift somewhere” My response was “Sure, your name’s Ivy, isn’t it? Which direction are you headed?”

She lowered her sunglasses, winked and replied, “Which direction do you want to go?’ Okay, I thought, this seems interesting. We walked to the parking lot, she headed to a Harley Davidson Electra glide. “You ride this?” I asked.

“Yes, haven’t you ridden a bike before?”

“Well, yes I have, but never as a passenger.

She mounted the driver’s seat, bent to flip down the passenger footboards and said, “Hop on.”

I swung my leg over, and thought I don’t mind riding bitch.

“Where do I hang on?” I asked.

“Well, there are passenger handles, or you can hang onto me.” She pulled on her riding gloves and as she reached forward to the hand grips her tee rode up her back exposing delectable flesh and the top of a black thong. I slid my fingers over her perfect hips and joined them on her warm and muscular abs. I thought This is a ride I’m going to enjoy.

She gunned the engine and we were off. We headed to the Pacific Coast Highway along the ocean, stopped to walk along the beach, the foaming waves lapping at our bare feet. We listened to seagulls swooping in, watched the tide and sunset. I took her hand, It seemed natural and warm. The rest is erotic memory.

I approached silently
from behind her chair.
My fingers gently covered her eyes.
“Guess who!”
I whispered.
“I can’t imagine!”
she coyly answered.
“Your tender fingers
are warm,
soft, unthreatening —
I’d like to get to know them better.”

“They’re all yours,”
I replied,
“here to do your bidding;
to explore your wildest fantasies.
Are you ready?”

I massaged her shoulders
tight with tension.
“Does that feel better?”
I asked.
“Yes,” she sighed
“please continue.”

I worked my way up her neck —
she moaned.
Gently down to her breasts
again she moaned.
“More, don’t stop…”

In her ear I murmured,
“Close your eyes,
I’m taking you
on an amazing
adventure.”

Autumn-Fairy-Cosplay-05

amongst the cedars
maples and sumac
I wandered the woodland
trails

I soon grew weary
and sat on a log
and slept the sleep of
the dead

I awoke and spied
a flicker of red
unlike what I’d ever
seen

like a butterfly
she fluttered and flew
enticing with beauty
and charm

entranced I followed
this mystic creature
deep in the forest
she led

it seemed like a game
she’d hide and I’d seek
I’d lose then find her
again

lost in the forest
she appeared nearby
watching and tilting
her head

She said, “I imagine
the beautiful wild life,
a watery paradise for runaaways
in search of the beauty of nature
and adventure and the taboo.

“I want to sip the wonder of life
open the portal of paradise
and take one another where
we have not been before.”
