I’ll admit
that I’m a result
of all the decisions I’ve made in the past;
all the people who have influenced me,
in a positive or a negative way:
my loves, my breakups, my disappointments.
Without them, I wouldn’t be me
but, I don’t carry them on my back
they don’t define who I am now.
I create myself
from moment to moment;
otherwise,
what is the point of living?
The past is faded, imprecise memories —
people who are no longer what they seemed to be —
a view from a faulty lens.
I have baggage —
everyone does.

So accurate. Could we live without the baggage that has created and shaped us into the people we are today? Imagine how naive we’d be!

Thank you for your kind words. I’m glad that on your blog you reminded me of the poetry of Alexander Pope. I still remember struggling with that in university.

Well, I just started reading it, and I am so impressed with his work!! It gives me a bit of a thrill at times! LOL! It’s really amazing! Glad my post served as a reminder and hopefully as a little gentle push into picking it back up again!

Thank you so much Barbara, I love your blog and will visit often. We share the same hopes and ideals for equality and peace. I think that if all people were treated equally peace would come naturally. We are all the same, we seek happiness and an end to suffering.

Well said Dennis, we only have the present and we are co-creators with God of our lives beginning with the thoughts we cultivate that become our realities.

I like you blog very much especially your words, “I stand with all people who advocate for justice. Justice, someone once said, is what love looks like in practice for all people, and I believe it is the only way to peace for us all.” We both have the same heroes and sheroes.

This is very true. But we aren’t only the sum of our own decisions, sometimes there are some that mold us and change us without our permission. 🙂

Dennis, this is one of your best, I believe, as you describe all of us. I particularly like this refrain.
“the past is faded, imprecise memories –
people who are no longer what they seemed to be –
a view from a faulty lens.”
Great work, BTG

I’m getting to this point. The past is certainly baggage that would be nice to lose at the airport. 🙂 Great post!
